HP Compaq Presario V2000 reviews

August 3rd, 2005

Compaq HP Presario V2000 laptopHere some nice reviews of the Compaq Presario V2000 (for different models of the V2000 series which comes with the Mobile AMD Sempron 2800+ CPU or Intel M processor)

Recently, PC Magazine published an HP Compaq Presario V2000 (Sempron) laptopreview:

“The HP Compaq Presario V2000 ($699 as tested) is a value notebook in the truest sense of the word. It’s void of all bells and whistles found on more expensive systems, but it performs well and comes with the basic necessities—namely a 40GB hard drive, a DVD/CD-RW combo drive, and an AMD Sempron processor, that will get you through the daily grind.

Using the Sempron 2800+ (1.6 GHz) processor, which is part of AMD’s value line, along with the ATI Mobility Radeon integrated graphics performance was okay. The integrated graphics are not adequate for 3D gaming, but avid gamers won’t be looking at this Presario V2000 notebook anyway. The graphics are, however, average for what this system is meant to do, namely e-mail, word processing, and Web browsing. By comparison, the Averatec scored about 8 percent higher on SYSmark— not very noticeable in real-world applications. The V2000’s battery lasted 2 hours 10 minutes on our BatteryMark tests. The Averatec fared a little bit better (2:25) with a similar-size battery (44 Wh). For an additional 3 hours of battery life, you can buy the optional 9-cell battery for $25.

The HP Compaq Presario V2000 laptop is a solid system for basic day to day computing, but to get the most from your money, consider spending a bit more on a system that will pay dividends, like the Averatec AV3270-EE1.”

PCWorld.com also writes about the Compaq Presario V2000: “This sleek, lightweight unit has a great screen and outstanding battery life. ”

IBM ThinkPad R50e Reviews

August 3rd, 2005

Lenovo IBM ThinkPad R50e notebookGiven its very inexpensive price, the IBM R50e notebook has good features for the money. Generally, not targeted at the gaming crowd, this computer will likely fulfill more modest laptop needs.

Quick IBM ThinkPad R50e Specifications:
-Processor type Celeron M , 1.5 GHz
-RAM installed size 128 MB 333Mhz DDR , supported: 2GB
-Hard drive: 30 GB , IDE 4200 rpm
-Graphics: Intel 855GM, 14.1 in display, 1024 x 768

The ThinkPad R50e Reviews

Latest IBM ThinkPad R50e review comes from BIOS Magazine. They write:

“There’s no disputing that IBM (now Lenovo) builds some of the best business laptops in the industry. The R50e laptop , like its ThinkPad siblings, offers a robust design and solid everyday performance, but consumers looking for whizz-bang multimedia features will be left wanting. The system’s price tag will attract many, but you should be aware that its feature are scant – especially when you can get much more from other manufacturers. Business buyers looking for a fleet of reliable workstations, however, should love this budget model.”

New OQO Model 01 Review

August 2nd, 2005

OQO Model 01 ComputerThere is a new review for OQO model 01 Handheld Windows Computer from Mobile Tech Review :

“Make no mistake, the OQO model 01 is one of the most impressive technological feats of the decade. OQO spent five years developing this handheld computer, and likely it took every day to fit a PC into a device the size of a large PDA. The model 01, currently the only OQO model, runs Windows XP Home Edition rather than a PDA operating system, yet it will fit easily in a purse, brief case or roomy pocket. At 4.9 x 3.4 x .9 inches, the device isn’t much larger than large Pocket PC and Palm models such as the Palm LifeDrive and HP iPAQ hx4700, though it is heavier at 14 ounces. For those who must have full blown Windows on the go in a tiny package, the nearly $2,000 OQO might prove indispensable. Since Windows XP wasn’t designed for use in such a small format, usability does suffer, and we’ll talk more about that later. ”

The conclusion of this OQO 01 review:

A marvel of technology and for now, unique. The Sony Vaio U750 is the only thing that came close and it’s both larger and on its way out. Windows XP in the palm of your hand and in your pocket just can’t be beat if you’re a road warrior with serious computing needs. Anything you can do with a Windows notebook, you can do with the OQO model 01 , albeit more slowly when it comes to input, navigation and computing speed. It has enough ports to use common popular peripherals and can be docked using the included cable when at the office.

Alienware Area-51m 7700 Reviews

August 2nd, 2005

Alien Area 51 7700 laptopThe latest Alienware – Area-51m 7700 review comes from IT Reviews. They are starting with a very good question: when is a laptop a ‘desktop replacement’?. Here is the answer:

The usual answer is when it is capable of emulating most of the features of a desktop while still remaining comparatively portable. However, the recent boom in such machines is more usually aimed at serious gamers who don’t want to interrupt their World of Warcraft or Doom 3 experience while they’re on the move, and often that means the name ‘laptop’ is a misnomer.

And now a few words from this review about Alienware Area 51m 7700 laptop:
“So it is with the Area-51m 7700, which for a start weighs a hefty 5.4kg (12lbs) and is therefore more likely to be living on a solid flat surface. It has the trademark alien face with the ultra-cool glowing eyes and in many other respects it’s a monster machine.

As soon as you open it up you’re confronted with a 17-inch widescreen LCD with a maximum resolution of 1,680 x 1,050 pixels, which provides brilliant detail and depth to the most hardcore shooting games, allied as it is to Nvidia’s powerful GeForce Go 6800 graphics card with 256MB memory. It’s powered by a Pentium 4 CPU with hyperthreading technology (3.0 – 3.8GHz, 1MB cache) and up to 2GB Dual Channel DDR2 PC-4200 533MHz memory. 7.1-channel surround sound comes as standard, though only four speakers and a subwoofer are supplied”

The verdict:

The Alienware Area 51 7000 laptop looks cool, it’s too heavy to carry around, but it’s a dream machine for serious gamers who want graphics, speed and performance cranked up to the max. You just have to be willing to pay the equally hefty price tag.

Nice review in my opinion.

Trusted Reviews also features an Alienware Area-51m 7700 review:
“The Alienware name is almost legendary in PC gaming circles.

Orange SPV-M500 Smartphone

August 2nd, 2005

Orange SPV M500 SmartphoneOrange SPV C550 and Orange SPV M500 are the latest smart phones launched by the Orange mobile phone network.

Orange SPV-M500 is a version of HTC’s ultra-compact PDA phone, ‘HTC Magician’. The M500 uses the same camera, but ships with 64MB of RAM. In place of the C550’s candybar phone form-factor, the M500 is styled like a compact PDA – it’s HTC’s ‘Magician’ – with a 2.8in, 240 x 320, 64,000-colour display.

It is a tri-band product, and incorporates Bluetooth. It runs Windows Mobile 2003 on a 416MHz Intel XScale PXA270 processor.

The SPV M500 mobile phone – PDA from Orange is particularly suitable for those who use a PDA (personal digital assistant) for business. In addition to mobile synchronisation with office data (e-mail, calendar, contacts, tasks, notes, etc.), the tiny all-rounder offers advanced voice command functionality.

The SPV M500 smartphone joins the successful Orange SPV range and is designed to succeed the established SPV M1000. Much effort has also gone into developing a considerably smaller PDA (58 x 108 x 18 mm, weight 150 g including rechargeable battery). The SPV M500 mobile phone / PDA is now slimmer and narrower than a packet of cigarettes. Another new feature is the integrated voice command software for telephone number dialling. Users no longer need to allocate a voice signature to each individual contact; the SPV M500 does that itself and will make the call in response to a clear voice command.

The SPV M500 is also the first PDA Smartphone from Orange with a 1.3 megapixel resolution integrated camera.
