Sony VAIO VGN FS215Z Review
Pocket Lint has a Sony VAIO VGN-FS215Z Laptop review and states:

For all intents and purposes, the Sony VAIO VGN-FS215Z notebook is a standard notebook with an external docking station supplied. The multimedia comes in the form of the built-in TV tuner and remote control unit. You’ll also find a quality pair of speakers, which is far better than using the notebook’s own. As a solution, it means you can watch TV when at home and take the notebook on the move with you, without the need of being weighed down.

The verdict of the Sony Vaio VGN FS215Z review:
As a hybrid solution the Sony VAIO VGN FS215Z laptop is an affordable and flexible notebook. At the price it’s worth serious consideration but there are a few problems, namely in the less than cutting-edge specification and second division graphics. When we think of multimedia notebooks we often think of all-in-one wonders like the Toshiba Qosmio range. However, Sony’s take on it means you get the flexibility of a portable with the additional power when you need it most – in the home.

This Sony Vaio laptop takes a score of 7 (out of 10) in this review.

Toshiba Satellite M35X-S163

August 1st, 2005

Toshiba Satellite M35X S163 notebookThe definition of this budget laptop from Toshiba from the review written by Laptop Magazine seems pretty fair: “A widescreen machine made for tight budgets”.

“As a budget laptop, the Toshiba Satellite M35X-S163 laptop tries to give you the most bang for your buck. The bang ends up sounding more like a whimper; the processor and the 4,200-rpm 60GB hard drive aren’t particularly fast. This notebook from Toshiba meets its goal of offering decent productivity performance, a good-looking widescreen display, and all of the ports you’ll need for less than a grand. Its oversized body and inexplicably short battery life won’t cut it for users looking for practical portability.

Without question, the best feature of the Toshiba Satellite M35X-S163 notebook is the cost. Every component from the processor to the hard drive has been scaled down a notch to shave a little something extra off the sticker price. Despite the scrimping, the Toshiba M35X Satellite covers all of the basic functions: a bright 15.4-inch display, integrated 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, a DVD/CD-RW drive, three USB 2.0 ports, and FireWire-everything you need to cover most everyday functions.”

Toshiba Satellite M35X-S163 Specifications:

• CPU 1.4-GHz Intel Celeron M
• RAM 512MB Expandable to 2GB PC2700 333Mhz
• Hard Drive 4,200-rpm 60GB
• Display/Resolution 15.4-inch/WXGA (1,280 x 800)
• Graphics/Video Memory Intel Extreme Graphics DVMA/64MB
• Optical Drive 8X DVD-ROM/24X CD-R/24X CD-RW/24X CD-ROM
• Wireless Networking 802.11b/g
• Ports Three USB 2.0, FireWire, S-Video, RGB, Ethernet, mic
• PC Card Slots – One Type II
• Weight 6.8 pounds
• Dimensions 14.4 x 10.8 x 1.5 inches

Toshiba Libretto U100 Reviews

August 1st, 2005

Toshiba Libretto U 100 Laptop Review PC World reviews the new mini laptop from Toshiba : Libretto U100 notebook and writes: “Toshiba’s Libretto U100 weighs only about two pounds, but features big-time performance.”

The mini-notebook from Toshiba which is about the size of a video cassette and weighing just over two pounds, is appreciated for its features:

Unique to the Libretto U100 notebook from Toshiba is the integration of a 3D accelerometer that senses sudden movement in any direction and parks the hard drive to protect data loss. On my test unit, it was so sensitive that if the desktop surface was not even, the alarm would trigger, interrupting my work. Better safe than sorry, I guess.

Overall, it’s the Lilliputian size and weight of the Libretto notebook that will attract road warriors who want to travel without being encumbered. My advice: try out the keyboard and touchstick before you buy. If you can deal with them, you’ve got an otherwise worthy and powerful portable PC.

Fed a Hi-Def video file, it’s hard not to be gobsmacked by the detail and fluidity of motion.

Sound quality is surprisingly good, thanks to a pair of Harman Kardon speakers, and volume can be controlled using a large dial set next to the keyboard.”

Acer TravelMate 2300 Laptop Reviews

Newsforge has an review on the Acer TravelMate 2300 laptop, saying “For less than $700, you’ll have a hard time finding a better Linux laptop computer than this.”

This is a free-os laptop (if you want to use Linux/BSD on your laptop instead of Windows).

The conclusion of this laptop review:
“The Acer TravelMate 2300 notebook is inexpensive, well-made, and works reasonably well with GNU/Linux. It used to be that inexpensive laptops were cheaply made, unreliable, and an overall waste of money. With the 2300 laptop, Acer has proven that laptops don’t have to be expensive to be good.”

Motion Computing LE1600 Reviews

CNET has a Motion LE 1600 Review :

In the world of pure-slate tablet PCs, the Motion M1400 has long been the model to beat. Enter the new Motion LE1600, which builds upon its older sibling with a faster processor, more RAM, and double the L2 cache–all in a lighter package. The LE1600’s carbon-fiber chassis is as corporate as a gray flannel suit, but its sleek design and the powerful performance woven inside make for a sexy fashion statement. If you’re sold on slate tablets and can stomach paying more than $2,000 for a computer without a keyboard, this is the machine for you.

The Motion LE1600 shares roughly the same dimensions as the M1400, measuring 11.6 inches long, 9.5 inches wide, and 0.7 inch thick. The 3.3-pound LE1600 weighs 0.1 pound less than the Fujitsu Stylistic ST5000, and it feels well balanced in the hand; you can easily hold the tablet in one hand while writing with the other, using the rubberized main battery as a grip. The thin extended battery adds little to the form factor. The tablet’s AC adapter brings the travel weight to a portable 3.9 pounds–a full pound lighter than the Fujitsu Stylistic ST5000’s travel weight.

Writing on the LE1600’s screen feels almost like writing with pen and paper, thanks to the rubberized digitizer stylus, which has the contours and easy grip of a Cross pen.

The bottom line of this nice review:
“Lighter and smaller than the competition, the admittedly pricey Motion LE1600 is one of the best full-size slate tablets we’ve seen so far.”

Editors’ rating for this tablet pc was “Very good”.

There is also a good photographic review of the LE1600 Tablet PC at Tablet PC buzz.

Pocket Size PC OQO model 01 Reviews

July 31st, 2005

OQO model 01 Pocket PC What is great about the OQO model 01 mobile computer is that it packs a complete Windows XP Professional solution in a box measuring 125 x 88 x 22mm.

OQO model 01 specifications:
Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Professional
Processor Speed: 1 GHz (Crusoe TM5800 by Transmeta)
RAM: 256 MB DDR SDRAM
Hard Drive Capacity: 20 GB
Graphics: Silicon Motion Lynx3DM (8MB Video RAM)
Wireless: 802.11b
Screen Size: 5.1 inches 800 x 480 max resolution
Screen Size Type: widescreen
System Weight: 0.9 lbs

OQO model 01 Review:
Trusted Reviews writes: “There’s no denying that the OQO model 01 is one of the coolest devices that I’ve ever got my paws on. At the most basic level the model 01 is an amazingly compact fully featured PC, in a very similar vein to the Sony Type U. However, there are some obvious advantages that the model 01 has over the Type U. Top of that list has to be size – the Type U was pretty close to pocket size, but the model 01 really is. I’ve been carrying the model 01 around with me for the past couple of weeks and it fits snugly into my back pocket.

The OQO model 01 computer is a beautifully designed, and well thought out mobile computing system. Although I had initial reservations about its real world usefulness, the more I used this pocket sized PC, the more reliant on it I became. Anyone who looks at the OQO computer model 01 and just sees it as a cool gadget is missing the point, this is a fully featured PC that’s small and light enough to be with you all day, every day. I can’t wait to see what OQO comes up with next.”
