“The Portege S100 reminds us that with the right components a thin-and-light notebook can double as a desktop replacement. A 2-GHz processor gives this system plenty of productivity performance and Nvidia graphics supply a decent amount of multimedia power. Shoppers should weigh the lack of a DVD burner, a surprising omission for a notebook that costs two grand, and the S100’s less than three hours of battery life before laying down their hard-earned cash.
Forget buying a laptop bag. The 4.4-pound silver-and-black Toshiba Portege S100 notebook is compact enough to fit inside a briefcase, and you’ll barely notice the extra five pounds you’re carrying. Pop the lid and you’ll find a large 14-inch display that’s sharp and bright. Upon arrival, that lid had a noticeable scar on the bottom (so don’t expect a system that’s scratchproof).”

The Toshiba Portege S100 laptop, a thin-and-light laptop, features a swappable bay–handy for adding an optical drive, an additional hard drive, or an extra battery–and a large screen in a featherweight case. It also includes a fast current-generation Centrino processor that helped it earn stellar scores in our performance benchmarks; unfortunately, the system did not excel when it came to battery life.
The Portege S100 from Toshiba falls on the slim-and-trim end of the thin-and-light spectrum, measuring 12.5 inches wide, 10.5 inches deep, and 1.2 inches thick and weighing 4.4 pounds. The similarly designed Fujitsu LifeBook S7010 weighs one-tenth of an ounce less, and the 4.2-pound Sony VAIO VGN-S260 has a smaller 13.3-inch screen. The Portege S100’s heavy AC adapter weighs almost 1 pound, bringing the system’s total weight to nearly 5.5 pounds.
