Shock resistant hard drive on DELL notebooks

Extreme Tech reports about the Dell’s Rugged HD:

“Dell Inc. said Tuesday that it has added an optional shock-resistant hard drive on select notebook computers, specifically the Latitude D610 and Dell Precision M20 mobile workstation.

“Dell welcomes the challenge of delivering product enhancements based on customer feedback and driving high-end technologies into the mainstream,” said Gretchen Miller, director, worldwide notebook product marketing, in a statement. “Our current Latitude and Dell Precision mobile platforms, with the Tri-Metal chassis, reinforced LCD backs and sealed keyboards, continue the Dell tradition of excellent durability, and we look forward to improving on this quality standard.”

The 30-GB hard drive will be priced as an $129 add-on, although the ruggedized drive will provide a 145 percent upgrade ot the drive’s shock protection — which, to Dell, means a 145 percent increase in the height above a carpeted floor that a notebook can be dropped and still function.”
