Samsung X20 laptops with MIMO

August 12th, 2005

Samsung X20 Laptops will have MIMOSamsung announced that it will ship new laptops with embedded MIMO Wi-Fi technology based on Airgo’s True MIMO chipset. The technology based on Airgo’s True MIMO chipset will offer enhanced wireless performance through using multiple wireless streams on a single channel using two or more antennas. Airgo claims speeds of up to 108Mbps, although actual speeds will be slower with network overhead. The new Samsung X20 models will offer MIMO-enhanced wireless connections while maintaining interoperability with 802.11b, 802.11g and 802.11a/g devices.

K.H. Uhm, Vice President of Marketing for Samsung, said,

“Given their significant technology lead, Airgo’s True MIMO is the best fit for embedded wireless in our new high performance Samsung X20 laptops. Together, we are enabling the mobile office by offering a standards-based platform with wireless connectivity that outperforms all other embedded solutions on the market.”

According to third-party testing conducted by The Tolly Group, Samsung laptops with embedded True MIMO technology provide eight times the speed and 13 times the coverage area compared to the same Centrino-based notebook.

Airgo claims that in power-consumption tests, True MIMO technology is 2.1 times more energy efficient than Centrino wireless.

Dell Inspiron XPS2 Review

August 11th, 2005

Dell Inspiron XPS2 laptopThere is a new Dell Inspiron XPS2 Review from Notebook Review:

“The Dell Inspiron XPS2 has a nice touch that is derived from the desktop modding community. The speakers, air vents, and XPS logos in the lid are all illuminated with LEDs. The LEDs can be individually configured with one of sixteen colors, and one can change their intensity or turn them off altogether.”

About the Dell Inspiron XPS2 Screen:

“The screen on the Dell XPS2 laptop is nothing short of stunning. It is big, beautiful, and very high resolution. Although it features the same 1920×1200 resolution as Dell’s 24″ widescreen desktop LCD, everything on it is quite readable. I had trouble reading my Sony’s screen from more than a foot away; I can get several feet away from this screen and still be able to make out text.

The Dell Inspiron XPS2 has a wide array of ports. It includes a whopping six USB 2.0 ports, four on the back and two on the left side (I can’t see myself using any more than four of them at one time, though). It also includes a four-pin (mini) FireWire port on the right side for use with DV camcorders and external hard drives.”

A summary of this Dell Inspiron XPS2 review:

I love this laptop. The screen is beautiful, the built-in speakers are decent, the performance is blazing fast, and I don’t know how I lived without the multimedia buttons on the front. I also love to show off the LEDs to people, and the DVI port is a must-have in my opinion for anyone who wants to use another monitor with the laptop. Finally, I love how much more versatile it is than my desktop was. I can just pack it into the backpack and take its tremendous processing power with me to wherever I want to go.

And the conclusion of this review:

“Okay, so the road getting here was a bit bumpy. But overall, the Dell Inspiron XPS Gen 2 is a great laptop, and more importantly, a worthy replacement for my desktop. All these years I didn’t know what I was missing, but now I’m quite satisfied with my computer setup. ”

Laptop Security : Mobile Theft Protection from Gateway

August 11th, 2005

ZDnet news reports: “Gateway puts a trace on laptops“. Starting with Gateway’s M250, M460 and M680 notebooks there is a new hardware available called The Mobile Theft Protection. It uses technology from Absolute Software’s Computrace, and the main feature is that it promises to locate computers:

Once the device is activated, Absolute guarantees the recovery of the computer. If the laptop is not recovered within 60 days, the customer may be eligible for a refund of up to $1,000.

The device is preinstalled in the laptops, but customers will need to add $99 to the price of the computer to activate the coverage for three years.

Gateway’s other embedded security feature, now available for notebooks, is the industry’s latest (and controversial) hardware security standard–Trusted Platform Module version 1.2. The technology is already included in Gateway’s E-series desktop computers.

Gateway said the TPM chip helps encrypt data and manage passwords. The hardware includes secure authentication software to protect corporate networks by storing keys, passwords and digital certificates on the processor, the computer maker said.
