Evesham Quest A220 Laptop

August 23rd, 2005

Evesham Quest A 220 LaptopTrusted Reviews talks about the new Evesham Quest A220 Laptop: “As you would expect on a budget machine, graphics are on the integrated variety, but you still get built-in wireless, a DVD rewriter and one year warranty (upgradeable to three). A copy of Windows XP Home is preinstalled, though given the 64bit capability of the powerful new Turions you could be forgiven for wanting to give Windows XP 64 a try.

Best part of the Quest A220, as you might expect, is the price. £699 including VAT is the damage, which means students have plenty of change left from their loans to spend down the SU, while the rest of us can take our extra pounds down the pub where we can moan about what drinking slackers students are.”

The Evesham Quest A220 Laptop specifications include an AMD Turion 64 MT30 Mobile CPU, 512MB of 333MHz DDR RAM, a 60GB HDD and 15.4in WXGA (1366 x 768) widescreen display. The dimensions of the A220 : 2.9Kg, 35.5 x 25.5 x 30cm.

WideScreen Business Notebooks

August 23rd, 2005

Recently, e-week featured an article about widescreen business notebooks.
They state that “widescreen notebooks aren’t just for watching Lord of the Rings on DVD anymore, PC makers say.”

Businesses are beginning to request notebooks with widescreens, which are popular with consumers thanks to a greater 16:10 aspect ratio that allows them to display more information than a standard screen, kicking off a new trend that analysts say will help convert the notebook market almost completely to the more-rectangular displays over the next year or two.

Some notebook makers, responding to customers’ demands and also to falling widescreen panel prices, have already begun offering widescreen business machines.

About the advantages of a wide screen notebook (business notebook):
“Widescreen notebooks’ businesses productivity gains come from the ability to display multiple document pages side by side, which requires less scrolling, as well as the ability to run multiple applications and arrange their respective windows to be visible simultaneously.

While most notebook widescreen panels will come in sizes ranging from 10.6 inches to 17 inches, industry watchers appear to agree that 14-inch or 15.4-inch widescreen models will be the most popular, followed by 12-inch and 17-inch widescreens. ”

The article also talks about how different brands approach the widescreen business notebook product development.

Toshiba Tecra M4 Review – CNET

Toshiba Tecra M4 Tablet PCCNET Reviews features a Toshiba Tecra M4 Tablet PC review and writes:

With a silver lid and a black base, the Toshiba Tecra M4 convertible tablet looks right at home in the boardroom. It is solidly designed and loaded with features, but its 6.2-pound weight is a killer if you want to hold your tablet like a clipboard for any length of time. If you want a decent laptop with tablet functionality, the Tecra M4 provides top-notch performance, a comfortable keyboard, and a large 14-inch screen.

Appreciated features: Great performance; large, 14.1-inch screen; discrete graphics; built-in DVD burner.

Toshiba Tecra M4 Tablet PC receives 6.6 points in this review (“Good” rating):
The Toshiba Tecra M4 is a full-featured laptop that can occasionally be used as a tablet.

HP hw6500 Review

August 23rd, 2005

HP hw6500 Mobile Messenger SmartphoneOm Malik from Gigaom reviews the HP HW 6500 and writes about using HP hw6500 Mobile Messenger as a multimedia device:

I like the storage expansion options and you can get a 1 GB SD card cheap enough to basically use MM as a music player. Since it plays back WMA files, the storage is enough to cram in music/podcasts that can entertain you for a few hours. Mind you, this doesn’t mean if I will be replacing my iPod anytime soon, but for short walks or 15-minute bus rides, this is a good option. Then there is the option of converting your videos (on your PC) and putting them on the card. I found the video sucked up the battery life of the device, and decided to forego further testing. Talking about batteries – how is the battery life. At the end of day two, I had used up 40% of the total battery after initial charge. This is with Good Wireless Email running all the time, and sporadic voice calls, and some music “listening.”

The conclusion of this nice HW6500 review : ” The big downside of the device – its happy as a clam in the Windows world. It doesn’t make magic with a Mac as yet, because most of the existing programs like Pocket Mac don’t work for this particular model. On a scale of 1 to 10, this gets a solid 7 from me. A good buy for those who are looking for a Treo option.”

First Linux PDA phone?

August 23rd, 2005

Linux Devices reports about the World’s first Linux “PDA phone” on the way. They talk about Longcheer Technology and Oswin Technology which agreed to jointly market each other’s products and about the Zircon A108 linux pda.

A Chinese mobile phone hardware vendor and a Singaporean smartphone and PDA phone designer will jointly develop a Linux “PDA phone.” Longcheer Technology and Oswin Technology have additionally agreed to jointly market each other’s products, which include “knock-down” phones, and smartphones and PDA phone designs.

Oswin is a Singapore-based ODM (original device manufacturer) that designs embedded devices that are manufactured and marketed under various brands by other companies. To date, its PDA phone designs have run Palm OS. The newest version of Palm OS — Cobalt — runs on ARM processors, however, and Oswin says its newest PDA phone design — though built for Cobalt — can also run Linux and Windows Mobile. That design is called the Zircon A108, and is likely the basis for a Cobalt-based PDA phone that Oswin’s Hong Kong-based manufacturing and marketing associate, GSPDA (Group Sense PDA), has pledged to ship.

The Zircon A108 design may figure into Oswin’s deal with Longcheer, and could serve as the design foundation for the first-ever Linux-based PDA phone. This could, in turn, result in a widely available Linux-based ODM PDA phone.

Shock resistant hard drive on DELL notebooks

August 18th, 2005

Extreme Tech reports about the Dell’s Rugged HD:

“Dell Inc. said Tuesday that it has added an optional shock-resistant hard drive on select notebook computers, specifically the Latitude D610 and Dell Precision M20 mobile workstation.

“Dell welcomes the challenge of delivering product enhancements based on customer feedback and driving high-end technologies into the mainstream,” said Gretchen Miller, director, worldwide notebook product marketing, in a statement. “Our current Latitude and Dell Precision mobile platforms, with the Tri-Metal chassis, reinforced LCD backs and sealed keyboards, continue the Dell tradition of excellent durability, and we look forward to improving on this quality standard.”

The 30-GB hard drive will be priced as an $129 add-on, although the ruggedized drive will provide a 145 percent upgrade ot the drive’s shock protection — which, to Dell, means a 145 percent increase in the height above a carpeted floor that a notebook can be dropped and still function.”

Sony Vaio S270 Review

August 18th, 2005

Sony Vaio S270 laptopNotebook Review has a Sony Vaio S270 Review and writes about the design of the Vaio S270 notebook:

Just about everyone thinks this is one of the sexiest laptops around and I would have to agree. The black exterior looks both sleek and professional and the shiny VAIO letters add a touch of style to this already very decadent computer. Open it up and you’ll find yourself staring at a beautifully designed keyboard and touchpad. The sides are filled with the standard ports, but there are a few complaints here. First, there is no multicard reader. Second, the little cap for the USB ports looks very cheap and don’t fit in with the overall classy design…I’ve been typing this review the entire time on the s270’s keyboard and although it’s a preference issue, I believe it to be the best laptop keyboard on the market (including IBMs). The depth of each key is shallow

HTC Universal Review

August 18th, 2005

HTC Universal Smartphone - PDA On his blog, Jason Langridge have a HTC Universal Smartphone review and writes:

The Combination of the VGA Screen, Wifi and 3G make it unique in the Market for Windows Mobile devices. I have found myself spending a lot of time browsing the web marvelling at the gorgeous screen which seems to render web pages (especially with Windows Mobile 5.0) incredibly well.

The swivel screen like a Tablet PC allows you to close the screen and protect it when it isn’t in use and also is really handy if like me you listen to music on the device as you can close the screen preserving battery life whilst also allowing the Music to play on! The screen also switches neatly between landscape and portrait which is great for Word Documents and Spreadsheets alike.
